Sirius XM (NASDAQ:SIRI) announced today that a free application for Android-powered smartphones will be available in May, which will bring over 120 channels of the satellite radio provider’s content to consumers using Google Nexus One and Motorola’s DROID handsets. The free app will provide Sirius XM’s Premium Online content to mobile consumers on the go via WiFi and cellular data networks.

The free Android app will bring Sirius and XM subscribers access to most of the satellite radio provider’s online lineup, including its commercial-free music channels, MLB Network Radio, SIRIUS NFL Radio, NHL Home Ice, PGA TOUR, Mad Dog Radio with Chris Russo, CNN, Fox News Talk, NPR, MSNBC, Blue Collar Comedy Radio, The Virus featuring Opie & Anthony, Playboy Radio, Rosie Radio, Oprah Radio, and Martha Stewart Living Radio. Subscribers will also have access to several exclusive online-only channels. Howard Stern, MLB Play-by-Play, NFL Play-by-Play, and Sirius NASCAR Radio are still not available on any of Sirius XM’s mobile apps, as of yet.

The company first launched its iPhone app about a year ago, followed by a Blackberry app release several months later. With the coming Android app, Windows Mobile remains the only major cell phone platform without an official Sirius XM app. With the company’s foray into bringing its content to mobile consumers and the open nature of the Windows Mobile platform, it would seem likely that an official Sirius XM Windows Mobile app will be forthcoming.

The free Sirius XM app for the Google Nexus One and Motorola’s DROID will be available for download through the Android Market or by visiting www.siriusxm.com/android. After downloading the free app, a free 7-day trial to Sirius XM Premium Online will be available to new registering users. If you would like to be notified via email as soon as the Android app is available, visit www.siriusxm.com/android.

Being an Iphone user and cult member of Apple. :) We all know that bringing Siri to the Android can only be a plus. I subscribe to Sirius for my vehicle and also for an additional $2.99 a month I keep Siri active on my Iphone. The Iphone can plug in anywhere. So can the Android.

  3. This is wanderful news. As a droid user, this is definately an app that I will be using frequently!

  4. Demian nice summary of a very important step in Sirius Xm’s expansion into the Smartphone battleground for customers. Soon those providers lacking the ability to deliver this company’s unique “Content” will be left on the shelf by consumers demanding the very best for their already stretched out dollar……
