Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) officesFormer XM back-office staffer pleads guilty to embezzling over $900,000

Brenda L. Jones could get up to 2-1/2 years in prison for a scheme that began shortly after she started working in “accounts payable” at then Washington, D.C.-based XM Satellite Radio in 2005. The Washington Examiner says Jones was diverting money that was supposed to be paid to vendors to her own accounts.

Another woman working at XM also got some money. The other woman wasn’t indicted in the criminal case where Jones just pleaded guilty. But in November 2010, both Jones and Valencia Person were sued in civil court by XM — sued for $2,143,893 plus costs, according to federal court records.

The scam worked for a long time, even after Jones left the company in 2006. It was the unpaid vendors squawking that eventually led to the discovery of the embezzlement. By last June, a U.S. District Court in Maryland had entered a default civil judgment against both women.
