auto sales - new car salesSirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) CEO Mel Karmazin stated during the company’s last quarterly conference call that the consensus for 2012 total U.S light vehicle sales was $13.7 million and that the expected year-over-year growth of 8% provided a “solid foundation for subscriber growth this year.” While offering up full-year 2012 net new subscriber guidance of only 1.3 million, which comes in below the 1.7 million net new subscribers the company was able to generate last year and even below the 1.4 million the company was able to garner in 2010, Karmazin even added that he was “very optimistic about our ability to grow subscribers” and that he expected a “bigger contribution from the reactivation of radios in used cars” this year. With so much optimism, why guide for only 1.3 million net subscriber adds? Karmazin explained that management’s 2012 full-year subscriber guidance was “tempered by our sense of conservatism around the price increase we implemented January 1st, 2012.” That being said, Karmazin did add, “We will update our guidance, if appropriate, as the year progresses.”

In light of a strengthening auto sales channel, it may become more “appropriate” to raise subscriber guidance. Read More

General Motors (GM) Unveils Self-Driving Car

General Motors (NYSE:GM) - Self-Driving CarGeneral Motors’ (NYSE:GM) Cadillac division announced it is road testing new Super Cruise technology that lets the car steer itself on the highway. Super Cruise is cruise control on steroids. A sensor detects any cars ahead and slows the car to match their speed, then it also keeps the car centered within a lane on a highway. And it also employs automatic braking. So, yes, it just about drives the car for you through a mix of radar, ultrasonic sensors, cameras and GPS map data.

GM calls it “semi-autonomous” technology because the system still has limitations. If the lane markings on the highway are missing, the system might have trouble. Also weather conditions could affect system performance. So the driver must be ready to steer.

The full system could be ready for cars by 2015, but aspects of it will appear on the 2013 Cadillac XTS and ATS luxury sedans. They will get virtual front and rear bumpers that bring the car to a stop if they sense an impending collision. They also have full range adaptive cruise control that can bring a car to a full stop and then resume speed automatically. Read More

Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) has developed a prototype of a mood sensing system for the car that uses sensors to determine if the driver is happy, sad, angry or neutral because one’s mood can affect one’s driving.

An upset driver is less alert and his reaction times are slower. So the system will deliver warnings such as a pedestrian alert earlier. It could even take control over car functions like the braking.

Also, the technology can be used to improve safety systems, so if the driver is looking in one direction, the system can alert him to a road hazard spotted in the opposite direction. Read More
