Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) - CEO - Mel Karmazin

SiriusXM CEO Mel Karmazin

Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) released its Q1 2012 financial and operating results this morning and discussed those results during a conference call held at 8:00AM ET. The satellite radio service provider reported some record breaking numbers, including 405,000 net new subscribers for the quarter — the highest reported subscriber growth for the company in any Q1 since the 2008 merger of Sirius and XM.

The company also posted $805 Million in Quarterly Revenue, up 11% year-over-year and also a new record. Other highlights included Net Income of $108 Million ($0.02 per diluted share), which is up 38% year-over-year, Adjusted EBITDA of $208 Million, up 15% year-over-year, and Free Cash Flow of $15 Million, up from (-$17) million in the first quarter of 2011, the first time the company has ever reported a positive Free Cash Flow number in a first quarter.

All of this was possible while also reporting a decrease in self-pay monthly churn year-over-year, from 2.0% to 1.9%, which is also notable because this is the first quarter that subscribers were impacted by the price increase Sirius XM instituted on January 1st, 2012. The new vehicle consumer conversion rate remained stable at 45%. In light of a strengthening auto sales channel, Sirius XM management also raised their 2012 subscriber growth guidance from 1.3 Million to 1.5 million. “90% of SoundExchange’s revenue last year came from Pandora and Sirius XM.”

Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) - Pandora Media (NYSE:P) - SoundExchange - royaltiesThat’s Live365 General Counsel Angus MacDonald, telling TRI he just couldn’t quite leave the topic of SoundExchange revenues alone. Yesterday’s TRI had Angus’ determination that “Pandora generates 37% of the total revenues at SoundExchange”, the not-for-profit clearinghouse for royalties.

Here’s Chapter 2. Angus says “I knew Sirius paid a lot to SX and was pretty sure it was more than what Pandora pays. However, Sirius’ SEC filings do not break out its SX-related costs…I decided to skim through Sirius’ complaint against SX and I noticed this sentence: ‘In 2011, Sirius XM paid nearly $200 million in statutory royalties to the record industry on account of this obligation — making it by far the largest payor of statutory royalties.’ Read More

Internet Radio’s Weekly Audience Jumps 30%: Arbitron-Edison Study

The following article comes from Tom Taylor’s newsletter, Taylor on Radio-Info.

Headline of the latest Arbitron-Edison “Infinite Dial” – a 30% jump in weekly online radio audience.

Internet Radio - Arbitron - EdisonThis is the 20th edition of a study of new media that dates way back to 1998, when there wasn’t even an accepted vocabulary for some of the behavior. (Arbitron used to refer to streaming radio listeners as “streamies.”) The latest data confirms the rapid rush toward broadband at home (now in 70% of homes), increasing reliance on the Internet (46% say it’s “the medium most essential to my life”), and the adoption of smartphones. Arbitron’s Bill Rose and Edison’s Tom Webster also take pains to point out that old media isn’t going into the dumpster. One of their bullet points – “Heavy usage of one medium is not necessarily associated with less time with other media.” Americans’ average daily time with AM/FM radio is 2 hours and 7 minutes. For heavy Internet users, it’s 2 hours and 14 minutes. Even heavy TV users, who gulp down 7-8 hours a day of tube time, use radio an average of one hour and 56 minutes. There’s other stuff that points to increased media time by Americans. “Digital device users are slightly more likely to have listened to AM/FM radio in the past week.” Bill Rose says “ten years ago, people were using seven hours a day of radio/TV/Internet. Now it’s eight hours and 18 minutes.” Overall, digital has increased “the ubiquity of media.” Check the just-released Infinite Dial “Navigating Digital Platforms” study on the Arbitron website here or the Edison site here. Here’s more — Read More
