By Demian Russian

Maxim Group - John Tinker - Sirius XMMaxim Group Senior Media Analyst John Tinker will be the special guest on Playground Radio tonight, Wednesday, November 17th, at 8:00PM Eastern. During tonight’s live, exclusive interview, Mr. Tinker will be sharing his thoughts on Sirius XM Radio’s (NASDAQ: SIRI) ongoing contract negotiations with Howard Stern, as well as his views on the Satellite Radio provider’s current and future prospects in the media space.

Tinker initiated coverage of the Satellite Radio provider back on August 18th, with a BUY rating and a $1.40 price target, when the company’s stock was still trading under a $1.00. In his August 18th initiation report, Mr. Tinker laid out a compelling case for the attractiveness of Sirius XM’s valuation. He compared Sirius XM’s EBITDA growth rate to mature media companies and compared Sirius XM’s EV to EBITDA multiple to Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) to show Sirius XM’s discounted multiple. Following Sirius XM’s reported third quarter financial and operating results, Tinker reiterated his BUY rating and raised his price target from $1.40 to $1.80. In that report, he noted that the Sirius XM was still trading at a discount to Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) and said that “SIRI should trade at a premium due to its long-term 24% EBTIDA growth rate, which implies an EBITDA PEG of 0.8x.”

John Tinker, Maxim Group Senior Media Analyst
Mr. Tinker has worked extensively in the media business as an equity analyst, private equity investor and fund manager. Prior to joining Maxim, he managed Steamer Capital, an investment firm. From 1996-1998, he was Managing Director at Sandler Media’s private equity fund. Previously, Mr. Tinker was the media/internet/entertainment analyst at ThinkPanmure, where he was the only analyst to recommend Google at its IPO price. In the 1990′s he co-founded Montgomery Securities (now Bank of America) media & communications division after stints at Furman Selz and Morgan Stanley. He graduated from Exeter College, Oxford University with an M.A. in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

John Tinker will be interviewed by Satellite Radio Playground’s Demian Russian and Brian “Newman” Rayl. After tonight’s interview with Mr. Tinker, a discussion about all of latest happenings in the world of Satellite Radio will follow. Sirius XM - SIRI

By Brian “Newman” Rayl

During a live conference call yesterday, Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) reported numbers that beat analyst estimates in nearly every category and raised guidance for full-year 2010. The conference call had many highlights and there were a number of metrics that were all time records for the company.

  • Adjusted revenue was up 15% year-over-year to a record $722.5 million (up from 629.6 million in the same quarter in 2009).
  • Adjusted EBITDA (Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization) was a record $170 million, up 60% year-over-year from 106 million.
  • Net subscriber additions were 334,727 (a number that was pre-announced back in October), up from 102,295 in 2009.
  • Free Cash Flow (FCF) of 62 million was recorded in this quarter of 2010, up 132% from 26.7 million in 2009.
  • Net income was 67.9 million or a penny per share in Q3 2010 compared to a loss of 151.5 million or a lost of 4 cents per share in 2009.

One of the biggest things that most listeners were anticipating was an announcement regarding the Howard Stern contract. Sirius XM CEO Mel Karmazin had announced during the Q2 conference call that they were hopeful that an announcement would be made before the conference call yesterday. It was reported that they are still in active negotiations with Stern, who’s contract is up at the end of this year, but there is nothing to announce at this time. He did stress that after the recent bond offering and with current cash in hand, the company had over $500,000 to invest in bringing any content that they felt would improve the user experience to Satellite Radio. Sirius XM (SIRI): Auto Sales Equals Subscribers

By Brian “Newman” Rayl

Satellite Radio Playground: Sirius XM (SIRI): Car Sales Equals SubscribersWhile the media focuses on the potential for a double-dip recession and a depressed economy, advancements and improvements are quietly being made in several sectors. The automotive industry is one such sector that is quietly, albeit slowly, improving. A great way to play the improving auto sector is through Sirius XM (NASDAQ: SIRI) Radio.

While this quarter saw auto sales fall slightly quarter-over-quarter, that is a normal phenomenon for this time of year. Automakers are still maintaining good numbers going into the end of the year, and Sirius XM is going to benefit nicely because of it. A trend has developed in both the months of July and August where the top sellers have been luxury brand vehicles like Tata Motor’s (NYSE: TTM) Jaguar and Porsche, as well as large SUVs and pickup trucks, such as the Ford (NYSE: F) F-150. These luxury model sales are inherently positive for Sirius XM, because they have a higher take rate and penetration rate — meaning they generate more subscribers.

In the second quarter of 2010, automakers sold a total of 3,068,723 vehicles, which resulted in a total of 583,249 subscriber additions for the quarter. Unfortunately, economic factors are going to play into the subscriber additions for the third quarter. Starting in July 2009, the United States government implemented the “Cash For Clunkers” program, which pushed lower priced, fuel efficient vehicles in exchange for a government stimulus. The biggest sellers were vehicles such as the Toyota (NYSE: TM) Corolla and the Honda (NYSE: HMC) Civic, which only have 3 month trial subscriptions, but other high sellers, including the Ford Focus, Ford Escape, and the Dodge Caliber, all come with 1 year trial subscriptions. None of these vehicles are considered high take-rate vehicles, meaning there could be an impact to increase churn when many of these trial subscriptions came to an end this quarter. Read More

Sirius XM Radio (SIRI): Opie & Anthony Sign Two-Year Deal

Opie & Anthony

by Brian “Newman” Rayl

Opie & Anthony have finally come to an agreement with Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI). Coming down to the final hour, Opie & Anthony signed a two-year deal with Sirius XM. Opie & Anthony broke the news live on the air this morning. The exact details of the contract were not disclosed, but they apparently are getting paid “about the same” as they were from their original XM contract.

Apparently, Opie & Anthony wanted more than money. They wanted a larger studio size for instance, and voiced their disappointment and frustration with not getting all of what they wanted. When comparing how they were treated by XM to how they are now being treated by Sirius XM, Opie said, “They made us really happy at XM with a lot of extra things.” Read More

Opie and Anthony Sign New Contract with Sirius XM (SIRI)?

Satellite Radio Playground: Opie and Anthony Sign New Contract with Sirius XM (SIRI)?In a developing story, Orbitcast has reported that Opie and Anthony may have just signed a 5 year deal with Sirius XM (NASDAQ: SIRI). The article is very clear that this has not been verified yet, but according to the article, rumors were circulating on Twitter yesterday that an agreement for a 5 year contract had been reached. We all know how rumors get started on social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook and that is no where near confirmation. However, according to a screenshot of the Opie and Anthony Chat Room, Anthony wrote “We signed”.

Sirius XM is actively engaged with contract negotiations with multiple parties, including Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony, the NFL, and others. Hopefully this is the first in a string of announcements that will ensure that Sirius XM has premium content for years to come.

We will release more details when they are available.
