Satellite Radio Playground: Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) Announces Live New Year's Eve ConcertsSirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) has announced that they will be airing numerous live concerts and various year-end countdowns throughout New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

With all of the recent content contracts which have been signed recently including Howard Stern, the NFL, Dr Laura Schlessinger, Russell Brand, The Spice Channel, Opie and Anthony, and Kevin Smith, many investors have been fearful that the New Year will be boring and devoid of any real news for the company. These and possible future live events can bring another spark back into the stock, the company, the shareholders, and most importantly of all, the subscribers.

Subscribers and investors alike should be thrilled by the available content and the extent to which Sirius XM has gone to provide this amazing coverage. This may only be a sign of what is yet to come. Liberty Media Corporation  (LMDIA, LCAPA, LINTA, LSTZA) Chairman John Malone, who also sits on the Sirius XM board of directors, was recently appointed as the interim Chairman of the Board of Live Nation Entertainment (NYSE:LYV), which promotes or produces over 22,000 events annually with total attendance exceeding 50 million individuals. Liberty Media owns 35% of Live Nation and 40% of Sirius XM. Many investors have seen this cooperation between companies as inevitable and there has been some suggestion that the two could possible team up to provide live Pay-Per-View concert coverage. Could these concerts be a testing ground for such a venture? Read More

This Saturday, August 28th, at 8:00 A.M. ET, on Sirius XM’s (NASDAQ: SIRI) Bob Edwards Show on XM Public Radio channel 133 and Sirius channel 196, Edwards will broadcast his first of two upcoming programs exploring the life experiences of people trying to survive — and save Louisiana. With all of the news and video coming out of the Gulf of Mexico since the BP oil rig disaster on the Deep Water Horizon on April 20th, 2010, not much mainstream media news has been reported on the recovery status of the Gulf Coast states since Hurricane Katrina.

The first of the series will be looking at the people and their struggles through a series of  in-depth special reports and interviews with fishermen, biologists, hunters, professors, and of course, the weary residents of Louisiana discussing how the oil and gas industry has been helpful, and how it has hurt the coastal areas.

In the second of the scheduled programs “No Place like Home: The Vanishing Culture and Ecology of Coastal Louisiana, Bob Edwards will bring you inside the “perfect storm” that has changed the coastal culture forever — ecologically, economically, and emotionally for the people who for generations have lived in these Gulf Coast regions. Again, through a series of interviews and reports, there will be discussion of how to rebuild the wetlands and try to restore a way of life from being washed away by the powerful storm from five years ago, and from the more current oil spill that has again devastated a slow-to-recover area. The second part in the series will air on Wednesday, September 1st. Read More

Slacker’s ABC News Integration Is No Match For Sirius XM’s News Content

Posted 21 Jul 2010 — by Demian Russian

by Demian Russian

Demian RussianSlacker, the internet radio service provider, added the integration of ABC News (NYSE: DIS) to its service yesterday. While news content is a welcome addition to the Slacker service, there are several drawbacks which highlight why it’s no match for Sirius XM’s (NASDAQ: SIRI) superior news content. Slacker seems to be taking steps to be more like Sirius XM Radio. First they added a couple of comedy channels, and now a news channel, and it’s not free. Did I just hear “subscription model?” Well, it is free for the 14 day trial period, but after that it will run you $4.99 a month ($3.99 a month with a prepaid annual subscription). After the free trial period, users who want access to the ABC News channel must subscribe to Slacker Radio Plus. In addition to the ABC News channel access, Slacker Radio Plus features no banner or audio ads, unlimited song skips, song lyrics, and mobile station caching. Sounds great right? It depends on how you look at it.

I tried out the free trial of Slacker’s ABC News and I discovered several drawbacks compared to the Sirius XM Satellite Radio service. Slacker’s ABC News channel consists of segments from ABC News programs, which means they are prerecorded, which means they are not live, which means you are listening to old news. I like to listen to live news as it’s happening. I know the Slacker ABC News content isn’t live, because the player would allow me to skip to the next segment when I first turned it on. I was not able to determine exactly how old the news was that I was hearing, as no indication of time was offered at any time during the programming I listened to.

Only one news channel is offered with the Slacker service. Besides not being live, Slacker’s ABC News channel only offers snippets of stories — which means you don’t get the whole story. Sirius XM’s subscribers get live access to several different news channels, including CNN, Fox, CNBC, Bloomberg, MSNBC, NPR, BBC, and The World Radio Network. Sirius XM’s news channel offerings include: financial, political, medical, entertainment, human interest, National and International news. You don’t just get the top stories, you get in-depth analysis and opinion of those stories. Read More
